South Carolina DOT reports progress on US 21 realignment and I-77 widening project

During the recent Town Council meeting in Blythewood, significant updates on local infrastructure projects were shared, highlighting ongoing developments that aim to enhance transportation safety and efficiency in the area. The meeting, held on May 27, 2025, featured a presentation by Brooks Bickley from the South Carolina Department of Transportation, who provided a detailed overview of the progress on several key projects.

One of the primary focuses was the construction along Community Road and the new US 21 realignment, which is nearing completion. Bickley reported that clearing and grubbing activities are approximately 90% finished, with asphalt milling on Community Road already completed. Traffic has been successfully shifted to the inside median of I-77 to facilitate ongoing work on the outside lanes. The completion of final roadway plans is expected by the end of the week, which will allow construction to proceed without delays.

The construction of a new railroad bridge over I-77 is also advancing, with all foundations completed and significant structural elements, such as columns and caps, already in place. Bickley noted that the installation of girders, which are crucial for the bridge's support, will be completed within the next two months, despite requiring nighttime rolling roadblocks to ensure safety during the process.

Looking ahead, the timeline for project completion was outlined: the railroad bridge is expected to be substantially finished by November 2025, while the reopening of Community Road is anticipated by March 31, 2026. The overall US 21 realignment is projected to be completed by November 2026, with all remaining interchange work, including the widening of I-77, slated for completion by summer 2027.

In addition to infrastructure updates, a community member raised concerns regarding safety measures on Blythewood Road, particularly near Mueller Road School. The resident highlighted a dangerous drop-off area and suggested the installation of Jersey barriers to protect children. Bickley acknowledged the concern and indicated that the issue would be investigated further.
