St. Louis Recorder's Office plans major digitization of historical records

During a recent meeting of the Budget and Public Employees Committee, the Recorder of Deeds Office for the City of St. Louis outlined its responsibilities and future goals, emphasizing the importance of digitizing historical records. The office, which manages vital documents such as land records, birth and death certificates, and city archives, plays a crucial role in maintaining the city’s historical integrity.

The Recorder of Deeds highlighted that while the office is a function of state government, it relies on the city for its budget. For the fiscal year 2026, the office aims to enhance its digitization efforts further. Despite previous requests for American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) funds totaling $1.5 million being denied, the office is exploring more cost-effective methods to digitize its archives. The goal is to improve online access and customer experience, making it easier for residents to research historical documents.
