Roanoke County unveils renovated free room cat room following $10K Petco Love grant

Roanoke County celebrated a significant milestone in animal welfare during the Board of Supervisors meeting on May 13, 2025, with the grand reopening of the newly renovated free room cat room at the Regional Center for Animal Care and Protection (RCACP). This project, spearheaded by Director Melinda Rector, received a $10,000 grant from Petco Love, enabling the transformation of a previously institutional hallway into a welcoming space for cats awaiting adoption.

The renovation was made possible through collaboration with Greater Good Charities, which provided additional resources and materials valued at approximately $2,000. The efforts included aesthetic improvements, such as wall art and a cozy environment designed to enhance the quality of life for shelter animals and improve the adoption experience.

During the meeting, Rector was recognized for her exemplary service and leadership at RCACP, where she has worked since 1990. Under her guidance, the shelter has secured nearly $100,000 in grant funding for various initiatives, including a successful inmate dog training program and enhancements to the shelter's operations. Her commitment to animal welfare has resulted in the successful placement of over 1,300 cats since 2021.

The Board of Supervisors passed a resolution honoring Rector's contributions, highlighting her dedication to improving community resources and fostering a culture of kindness within the shelter. The meeting concluded with a ceremonial ribbon-cutting, marking the official opening of the cat room, which promises to be a vital resource for both animals and potential adopters in Roanoke County.
