Local Library reports 10% visitor increase while preparing for summer reading program

In the heart of Lampasas, the local library is buzzing with activity and growth, as highlighted during the recent City Council meeting on May 27, 2025. With a commitment to serving the community, the library has expanded its offerings and seen a notable increase in patron engagement over the past year.

Currently operating 44 hours a week, the library boasts a collection of 27,691 items, including books, DVDs, audiobooks, and even Wi-Fi hotspots. The number of cardholders stands at 6,069, although many may be expired. Notably, the library welcomed 42,255 visitors in 2024, marking a 10.5% increase from the previous year, a testament to its growing popularity.

The library's programming has also flourished. Regular events include biweekly story times, a monthly agricultural story time in collaboration with the Lampasas County Farm Bureau, and STEAM classes for children aged 7 to 11. The introduction of a 4-H STEM class has further enriched the library's offerings, allowing kids to engage with hands-on learning using Lego kits.

One of the standout initiatives is the "Call Pals" program, where children read to dogs from the local shelter, fostering a love for reading while providing companionship to the animals. This program has gained traction, with children eagerly signing up for 15-minute reading slots.

As summer approaches, the library is gearing up for its annual summer reading program, already registering 41 children and 17 teens. The excitement is palpable, with plans for a celebratory event on June 9 to mark a significant milestone: reaching 1,000 children enrolled in Dolly Parton's Imagination Library program. This initiative, which promotes early literacy, will be celebrated with a party featuring special guests and photo opportunities.

Despite some challenges, such as a decrease in hotspot checkouts and fluctuating attendance at certain programs, the library remains a vital resource for the community. With 113 programs held last year and nearly 3,000 attendees, the library continues to adapt and thrive, proving its importance as a hub of learning and connection in Lampasas.

Looking ahead, the library's annual fundraiser, "Barbecue for Books," is set for October 20, promising to be another highlight in its calendar. As the library continues to evolve, it stands as a beacon of knowledge and community spirit, inviting all to partake in its offerings.
