Mesa Public Schools celebrates 50 years of innovative harp program

The Mesa Public Schools Harp Ensemble celebrated a remarkable milestone during their recent concert, marking 50 years of a unique and thriving music program in the district. The event, held on May 6, 2025, showcased the evolution of the harp program, which began with just one student and one harp at Carson Junior High School in 1974. Today, it boasts over 240 students across high schools and junior highs, all of whom not only play the harp but also participate in their school's broader instrumental programs.

The concert featured an alumni ensemble, bringing together former harp students from various years to perform a piece commissioned specifically for the Mesa Public Schools. This work, titled "Circle and Tumble," was composed by retired music teachers Dave and Jean Perry and reflects the program's roots in traditional Celtic music. The performance highlighted the program's impact on students, many of whom shared personal stories of how their involvement in the harp program opened doors to new opportunities and experiences.

The evening also included a special acknowledgment of the program's founders, Dr. George Smith and Dr. Ralston Pitts, who envisioned a harp program that would enrich the existing music curriculum. Current students expressed their gratitude for the support they receive from the community, parents, and music educators, emphasizing that the program's success is a collective effort.

As the concert concluded, the excitement was palpable, with plans already in place for next year's celebration, ensuring that the legacy of the Mesa Public Schools Harp Ensemble continues for future generations.
