Houston's Economic Development Committee meeting on May 28, 2025, unveiled significant advancements in airport infrastructure and operations, promising enhanced travel experiences for passengers at George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and William P. Hobby Airport (HOU).
A major highlight was the ongoing $2.55 billion redevelopment of Terminal B at IAH, which includes the construction of new concourses and a baggage bridge. This project aims to streamline passenger flow and improve overall airport efficiency. To minimize traffic disruptions during construction, officials opted for a three-month complete road closure rather than nightly closures, allowing for more predictable progress and less uncertainty.

This facility will enhance operational efficiency by consolidating various airport departments, including TSA, maintenance, and dispatch, into one location. This coordination is expected to improve response times during incidents and enhance overall airport management.
The committee also reported positive traffic data, indicating a significant reduction in severe traffic incidents at both airports. From January to April 2025, IAH experienced zero severe traffic issues, while Hobby Airport reported minimal congestion. These improvements are attributed to recent infrastructure upgrades and operational changes.
Further enhancements include the introduction of a new parking system utilizing license plate recognition technology, which has already received favorable feedback from travelers. The system aims to simplify the parking experience, making it more efficient and user-friendly.
The meeting also addressed aesthetic improvements at the airports, including a new epoxy coating at Terminal A to enhance its appearance and ongoing restroom renovations to meet the needs of millions of passengers. The upgrades are part of a broader initiative to improve the overall traveler experience, with new dining options and expanded shuttle services also in the works.
Looking ahead, the committee is preparing for increased travel demand, particularly with the upcoming World Cup. Houston aims to position itself as a central hub for visitors, facilitating easy access to various venues across the country.
As these projects progress, the Houston airport system is poised to offer travelers a more efficient, enjoyable, and modern experience, reflecting the city's commitment to enhancing its infrastructure and supporting economic growth.
