In a significant move for Utah's judicial system, the state Senate has confirmed Stephen Nelson as a judge of the Third District Court, which serves Salt Lake County and Park City. This decision comes following a favorable recommendation from the Senate Judicial Confirmation Committee, which met on December 14, 2023.
Governor Spencer J. Cox announced Nelson's appointment, expressing gratitude for the Senate's prompt consideration. Nelson, who replaces the retiring Judge Randall Scanche, brings a wealth of experience to the bench. He has served as an assistant U.S. attorney in the National Security Section since 2016, where he has handled cases involving organized crime, violent crime, and narcotics. Prior to this role, he spent 11 years as a deputy district attorney in the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office and also worked as an assistant attorney general.
In addition to his legal experience, Nelson is an accomplished academic, holding a PhD in political science and having taught over 4,000 students at the University of Utah. His educational background includes a bachelor's degree in economics from Westminster College and a Juris Doctor from the SJ Quinney College of Law.
The Senate's vote was overwhelmingly in favor of Nelson, with 28 senators voting "yes" and none opposing the appointment. This unanimous support reflects confidence in Nelson's qualifications and readiness to serve the community in this vital judicial role.
As Judge Nelson steps into his new position, his extensive background in law and education is expected to positively impact the judicial landscape in Utah, ensuring fair and informed decision-making in the court system. The confirmation marks a pivotal moment for the Third District Court, as it continues to address the legal needs of the growing population in the Salt Lake area.
