Board approves $1.1M roof replacement contract for Audubon Elementary

A major construction project is set to kick off in Colorado Springs as the Board of Education approved a complete roof replacement at Audubon Elementary School during a special meeting on May 29, 2025. Superintendent Gall and Chief Orton presented the details, highlighting the urgency and significance of the project, which is expected to begin immediately.

The existing roof, installed in 1996, has long needed attention, and this replacement is part of a broader initiative to upgrade aging infrastructure across the district. The contract was awarded to WeatherCraft, which submitted the highest technical score and the lowest overall price among three proposals. The total cost for the project is $1,149,130, with a 20-year warranty on the new roof.

Work is scheduled to start as soon as tomorrow, with a completion date set for July 31, 2025. The project includes standard terms and conditions, including a daily penalty of $500 for delays. Potential unforeseen issues, such as roof drain replacements, may arise once the existing roof is removed, but the project has a 10% allowance for modifications without needing further board approval.

This initiative reflects the district's commitment to maintaining safe and functional learning environments for students, with several other elementary roofs also recently upgraded. The swift action taken by the board underscores the importance of addressing infrastructure needs promptly to ensure the well-being of the school community.
