Colorado Springs school board approves $4.17M purchase of four properties near Palmer High School

The Colorado Springs School District No. 11 Board of Education held a special meeting on May 29, 2025, focusing on significant developments regarding school infrastructure and property acquisitions.

One of the primary topics discussed was the approval of a new roof for Audubon Elementary School, which is expected to be completed by the start of the school year. The board confirmed that the roof installation was fully completed, marking a significant upgrade for the school.

Additionally, the board moved to authorize the purchase of four real estate properties adjacent to Palmer High School for a total not to exceed $4,175,000. This resolution delegates authority to Chief Operations Officer Chris Odom to negotiate and finalize the purchase agreements. The properties in question are located at 219 and 221 East Saint Brains Street, and 430 North Weber Street, and 429 North Nevada Avenue.

Concerns were raised by a board member regarding the historic value of these properties, as they are situated within the historic Wasatch Weber neighborhood. Dr. Wise addressed these concerns, clarifying that while the properties are not officially registered as historic, the district is committed to engaging with local historic societies to explore options for preserving the neighborhood's history. Discussions are ongoing, with a presentation to the Historic Preservation Board scheduled for June 2.

The board emphasized the importance of continued dialogue with the community regarding the future of these properties, including potential preservation efforts or alternative uses.
