A groundbreaking initiative to enhance early childhood education and aftercare programs was unveiled at the Desoto County School District's recent board meeting. The district announced the launch of a new Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) program at Nocatee Elementary School, fully funded by the Bransick Foundation. This generous support allows the district to expand from two classrooms to four, accommodating a total of 76 students for the upcoming school year.
The VPK program aims to provide essential resources, staffing, and opportunities for field trips, enriching the educational experience for young learners. In addition to VPK, the district is piloting two aftercare programs—Mustang Care and Cowboy Care—targeting school-age children from kindergarten through fifth grade, as well as VPK participants. The Bransick Foundation is also covering costs for VPK students enrolled in Mustang Care, ensuring comprehensive support for families.
Moreover, the district is introducing the Little Boots childcare program for children of full-time employees, catering to ages one through three. This initiative will feature two classrooms at West Elementary, further demonstrating the district's commitment to supporting its staff and their families.
Adding to the excitement, the Henson Fund has pledged to fund 100 students in the aftercare programs for families facing financial or academic challenges. This collaboration underscores the district's proactive approach to addressing community needs and creating enriching environments for children.
The board expressed enthusiasm for these developments, highlighting the importance of community partnerships in fostering educational growth and support for families. As these programs roll out, the district anticipates a positive impact on both students and their families, reinforcing its mission to provide quality education and care.
