Town officials demand accountability from JCP and L and Verizon on utility pole maintenance

During the recent Hopatcong Borough Mayor and Council meeting, significant concerns were raised regarding the management and maintenance of utility poles and tree trimming in the community. Residents expressed frustration over the presence of old utility poles, particularly those left standing after new poles were installed, which contribute to the visual clutter and potential safety hazards in the area.

A key point of discussion centered on the accountability of utility companies, specifically JCP&L and Verizon. Residents noted that while JCP&L is responsible for tree trimming around their electrical lines, other companies like Verizon and Optimum do not have similar obligations, leading to delays and complications when poles are replaced. One resident highlighted a situation where a new pole was installed next to an old one still carrying live wires, raising safety concerns that have persisted for two years.

The council discussed the need for a joint meeting with representatives from all utility companies to address these issues collectively. Residents emphasized that if JCP&L is being held accountable for their maintenance practices, other utility providers should also be included in these discussions to ensure comprehensive solutions.

Additionally, a representative from another utility company suggested that reaching out to the Board of Public Utilities (BPU) could expedite the resolution of these issues. They noted that when the BPU is involved, utility companies tend to respond more promptly to concerns raised by municipalities.

The meeting underscored the importance of collaboration among utility companies and local government to enhance community safety and aesthetics. As the council considers next steps, residents are hopeful that these discussions will lead to improved utility management and a cleaner, safer environment in Hopatcong.
