City replaces aging lifeguard towers with new wood models along pier

San Clemente's Public Safety Committee meeting on May 27, 2025, highlighted a significant upgrade in lifeguard tower infrastructure, with the city announcing the construction of three new towers along the coastline. These towers, located on the South side of the pier, at T Street, and just south of T Street, are part of an ongoing effort to enhance public safety and lifeguard operations.

The discussion revealed that the new towers are constructed primarily from wood, a material preferred for its durability and heat resistance. This choice comes after past experiences with fiberglass towers, which were deemed less suitable for lifeguard use. A representative noted that a fiberglass tower built in 2005 was not ideal for lifeguards who spend long hours on duty.

The cost of the new towers was also a focal point, with the city managing to build them for approximately $46,000 each, a significant saving compared to the $57,000 price tag for similar fiberglass structures. The previous towers, some dating back to the early to mid-1980s, have proven their longevity, with proper maintenance allowing them to last 30 to 40 years.

The committee emphasized the importance of routine maintenance to ensure the new towers remain functional and safe for lifeguards and beachgoers alike. This investment in infrastructure not only enhances safety but also reflects the city’s commitment to maintaining high standards for its coastal facilities.
