During a recent public workshop held on May 29, 2025, in Opa-locka, community members voiced significant concerns regarding the city’s sign ordinance, which they believe is hindering local businesses. Alexander Bilbao, representing Ace Hardware, highlighted the challenges faced by businesses due to strict regulations that limit signage options.
Bilbao presented a PowerPoint illustrating how the current sign ordinance has negatively impacted visibility for businesses along key corridors, particularly Opelika Boulevard and Alibaba Avenue. He argued that the lack of adequate signage creates a “ghost town” atmosphere, making it difficult for potential customers to locate businesses. He shared examples of local establishments that have been forced to remove their signs, resulting in diminished visibility and, consequently, reduced foot traffic.

He emphasized that while the city manages street lighting, the signage is crucial for advertising and attracting customers, especially during evening hours.
Bilbao's presentation resonated with many attendees, who echoed his sentiments about the detrimental effects of the sign ordinance on both businesses and the community. He concluded by urging city officials to reconsider the regulations, arguing that a more flexible approach could enhance the local economy and improve the overall aesthetic of Opa-locka.
The discussions at the workshop reflect a growing concern among residents and business owners about the need for policies that support economic growth and community vibrancy. As Opa-locka continues to navigate these challenges, the outcomes of such workshops may play a pivotal role in shaping the future of local commerce and community engagement.
