Los Angeles celebrates Africa Day promoting unity and economic ties with African nations

The Los Angeles City Council held a special meeting on May 30, 2025, to celebrate Africa Day, marking the 62nd anniversary of the African Union. The event, hosted at City Hall, aimed to honor the resilience and potential of the African continent while fostering unity and solidarity among African nations.

Councilmember Curran Price opened the celebration, emphasizing the significance of Africa Day as a moment to reflect on the continent's rich history and ongoing challenges. He highlighted the importance of the African diaspora in Los Angeles and the city's commitment to strengthening ties with African nations.

Carolyn D. Webb Demarcazes, Chief of Staff to Mayor Karen Bass, represented the mayor at the event. She acknowledged the contributions of the African Consular Corps and expressed gratitude for their partnership in enhancing diplomatic relations. Several consuls from African nations were recognized for their roles in fostering connections between their countries and Los Angeles.

The meeting underscored the economic potential of Africa, noting that the continent is home to some of the fastest-growing cities and a rapidly increasing population. Despite this, African nations remain underrepresented in trade and investment activities in Los Angeles, accounting for less than 1% of the city's goods exports. The city is considering developing an Africa trade investment strategy to address these challenges and enhance economic ties.

Looking ahead, the council discussed the upcoming 2028 Olympics and the anticipated participation of African nations, which is expected to provide opportunities for cultural exchange and economic growth. An initiative called "Africa World" was proposed, aiming to create a vibrant marketplace in South Los Angeles that celebrates African culture through art, food, music, and sports.

The meeting concluded with a recognition of individuals and organizations contributing to the African community in Los Angeles, reinforcing the city's commitment to building a stronger, more connected relationship with Africa as it prepares for significant global events.
