A new pilot program aimed at expanding public access to the BMX track in Elgin is set to launch, following a unanimous vote by the City Council. The initiative, which will allow for limited public use of the track, is designed to evaluate the feasibility of increased hours and accessibility for residents and non-residents alike.
During the May 28 meeting, council members discussed the logistics of the program, emphasizing the need for effective communication to ensure residents are aware of public events hosted by the BMX association. Council member Good highlighted the importance of promoting these events, suggesting that the city could assist in advertising to enhance community engagement.

However, several council members expressed a desire to explore the possibility of extending these hours, particularly on Mondays, to accommodate more users. The council agreed to reassess the schedule after the BMX season to determine if additional hours could be added.
Concerns were raised about the fee structure for residents versus non-residents, with calls for a clearer distinction to ensure that local taxpayers receive the best value. The proposed rates will be $5 for residents and $7 for non-residents, a decision that was met with general approval among council members.
As the pilot program moves forward, the council plans to gather feedback from users to refine the offering and ensure it meets community needs. The initiative marks a significant step in enhancing recreational opportunities in Elgin, with the potential for broader access to the BMX track in the future.
