A new alternative teacher certification program in Alabama is gaining attention for its self-paced, competency-based approach designed to accommodate working professionals. The program, operated by the American Board, allows candidates to study on their own schedules, making it accessible for those juggling full-time jobs.

During a recent Alabama State Board of Education work session, representatives highlighted the program's rigorous online modules, practice exams, and alignment with national teaching standards. Candidates must pass both a pedagogy exam and a subject area exam to complete the program, ensuring they meet the same certification requirements as traditionally prepared teachers in Alabama.

The program's affordability was also emphasized, with costs around $1,900 and various financial options available, including installment plans and discounts for military personnel. On average, candidates complete the program in 7 to 10 months, depending on their prior knowledge and commitment.

A study conducted in partnership with Drexel University revealed promising results, showing that 95% of American Board-trained teachers performed as well as or better than their traditionally prepared counterparts. Additionally, 97% of principals reported a strong retention rate for these teachers, indicating their effectiveness in the classroom.

While the program does not include a traditional student-teaching component, candidates will participate in a mentorship program during their first one to two years in the classroom. This initiative aims to support new teachers as they navigate the challenges of modern education, particularly in managing classroom dynamics and addressing the mental health needs of students.
