Augusta community opposes liquor store proposal at Windsor Spring Road service station

Concerns over a proposed liquor store at 4505 Windsor Spring Road dominated the recent Planning Commission meeting in Augusta City, Richmond County, as community members voiced strong opposition to the establishment. The meeting highlighted public safety fears, particularly in light of recent incidents involving drunk driving fatalities in the area.

A local resident, speaking on behalf of the opposition, emphasized the significant risks associated with alcohol sales, citing statistics on DUI incidents in Georgia and Richmond County. He referenced a tragic hit-and-run accident involving a drunk driver that occurred just weeks prior, underscoring the community's urgent need for safety measures. "We want to make sure that we have as much buffer between us and alcohol as we can get for the purpose of keeping us safe," he stated, urging the commission to reconsider the special exception for the liquor store.

Another resident, Carrie Charles, echoed these sentiments, expressing frustration over the proliferation of alcohol sales in the neighborhood. "We have beer sold on every corner. Why put a liquor store right at our front door?" she questioned, highlighting the lack of grocery stores and safe recreational spaces for children in the area.

In response, the petitioner, Shravan Kumar Raul, clarified that the original intent for the property was to establish a service station, not a liquor store. He expressed willingness to explore alternative uses for the space if the community remained opposed to the liquor store.
