The Selma City Council made a significant move during its November 14 meeting by approving an exclusive franchise agreement with Frontier Texas Ventures 1 LLC for solid waste collection and disposal. This decision comes as the city prepares to transition from its current contract with Republic Services, which ends on December 31, 2024.
Frontier Texas Ventures 1 LLC emerged as the most cost-effective option, offering a monthly residential rate of $13.25, significantly lower than the $19.95 proposed by both Republic Services and Waste Management. This new agreement not only promises savings for residents but also includes enhanced services, such as monthly household hazardous waste collection at no additional cost.
The contract spans ten years and features fixed price increases for the first five years, providing residents with protection against excessive price hikes tied to the consumer price index. City officials emphasized the importance of clear communication regarding the upcoming changes, with plans for an aggressive outreach campaign utilizing reverse 911, social media, and direct mail to keep residents informed.
As the city gears up for this transition, residents can expect a shift to weekly waste pickup, with specific schedules to be announced soon. The council's decision marks a proactive step towards improving waste management services in Selma, ensuring both affordability and enhanced service for the community.
