Long Beach reports increase in homelessness linked to wildfire displacements

The government meeting held in Long Beach on June 3, 2025, unveiled the findings from the 2025 Homeless Point-in-Time count, revealing significant insights into homelessness in the region. Mayor of Long Beach opened the meeting by emphasizing the context of this year's count, which took place in late January amid major wildfires that affected many families across Los Angeles County. The mayor noted that the community, including firefighters, police officers, and public health officials, rallied to support those displaced by the fires.

Paul Duncan, a city official, provided details about the count, which recorded 3,595 individuals experiencing homelessness, marking an increase of 219 people, or 6.5%, from the previous year. Notably, 67 individuals reported being displaced due to the wildfires, accounting for 76% of the increase. Without this factor, the overall increase in homelessness would have been approximately 1.5%.

Duncan also acknowledged the efforts of over 300 volunteers who participated in the count, highlighting the challenges faced due to poor air quality during the fires. He expressed gratitude for the community's involvement and the support provided to those affected.

Fire Chief Jesse McCann reflected on the devastating impact of the Palisades and Eaton Canyon fires, which destroyed homes and displaced families. He praised the resilience of first responders and the community's collaborative efforts to provide assistance during the crisis.

The meeting concluded with a focus on the importance of expanding shelter options, including the Project Roomkey initiative, which aims to provide temporary housing for those in need.
