City plans construction of significant trail projects including Pope's Run and Grassy Creek

The Indianapolis Greenways Development Committee convened on May 29, 2025, to discuss significant advancements in the city’s trail systems, highlighting ongoing projects and future developments that promise to enhance connectivity and recreational opportunities for residents.

One of the most anticipated projects is the Nickel Plate Trail, which is nearing completion and is expected to be ready for a ribbon-cutting ceremony around July 1. Committee members noted a surge of finishing activities, emphasizing the importance of patience as the trail is not yet open to the public.

In addition to the Nickel Plate Trail, the committee reported on the successful bidding of two key projects: Pope's Run Phase 3 and Grassy Creek Trail. Pope's Run Phase 3 will connect the Art Nature Park to Brookside Park, with construction set to begin shortly and completion anticipated by the end of the year. Meanwhile, the Grassy Creek Trail, which follows a former rail corridor, will extend access between Midhofer and Carroll Roads, linking to the recently inaugurated Grassy Creek Environmental Center.

The committee also discussed the Eagle Creek Trails, which are currently under construction between Dandy Trail and Interstate 465. Plans are in place to bid for the next segment, which will connect to an INDIGO transit stop at Washington Street and Rockville Road. This project aims to create a continuous trail along Eagle Creek, with future funding secured for the final connection to McCarty Street.

Another noteworthy development is the upcoming construction of the urban or interurban trail near downtown, which will involve a road diet on Madison Avenue to create more space for pedestrians and cyclists.

These projects reflect the city’s commitment to expanding its greenways and enhancing outdoor recreational spaces, ultimately fostering a healthier and more connected community. As construction progresses, residents can look forward to improved access to nature and recreational activities throughout Indianapolis.
