Berkeley County Schools honor retirees and outstanding students at annual recognition ceremony

The Berkeley County Schools Board of Education held a heartfelt meeting on June 2, 2025, celebrating the retirement of several dedicated educators and recognizing outstanding student achievements. The event highlighted the profound impact these individuals have had on the community and the educational landscape.

Among the retirees honored was Miss Waterford, a beloved science teacher at Musselman High School, who has spent 33 years inspiring students. Her innovative teaching methods encouraged students to connect with science on a deeper level, fostering a love for learning that extended beyond the classroom. Colleagues praised her leadership and unwavering support, describing her as a keystone species in the school’s ecosystem. The celebration included a unique "victory lap" through the halls, where she was cheered on by students and staff, symbolizing her lasting legacy.

The meeting also recognized Sydney Boston, a standout student from Spring Mills High School, who was named the Boys and Girls Club Youth of the Year. Sydney's journey began at the club, where she developed her passion for photography and leadership. Her accolades include being a semifinalist for the prestigious United States Presidential Scholars Award, showcasing her exceptional talents and commitment to her community.

Additionally, the board celebrated the achievements of ten eighth graders who excelled in the Golden Horseshoe test, a long-standing program designed to promote knowledge of West Virginia's history and culture. These students will be inducted into the Golden Horseshoe Society, a recognition that honors their academic excellence and prepares them for future citizenship.

Superintendent Dr. Haught expressed gratitude for the retirees and the impact they have made on students and families throughout their careers.
