Lake Malibu Association requests seasonal drawdown to combat sediment and algae issues

A significant proposal to address environmental concerns at Lake Malau was presented during the recent Hudson City Council meeting. Representatives from the Lake Malauulu Association, including Mike Latch and Warren Schneider, outlined a request for a drawdown of the lake's water levels.

The drawdown aims to combat issues stemming from the removal of the Willow River Park Dam, which has led to sediment buildup, reduced water depth, and increased algae blooms. Latch explained that previous studies, including those conducted by engineering firm Stantec, indicate that lowering the lake's water levels during winter can effectively flush out some sediment and compact the remaining material. This process not only restores depth but also helps control invasive species like Eurasian milfoil and manage carp populations.

The council did not require staff involvement for this request, signaling a streamlined approach to addressing the lake's ecological challenges.
