Durham County is set to enhance its disaster preparedness efforts following a recent work session held by the Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) on June 2, 2025. During the meeting, community leaders emphasized the importance of public engagement in disaster readiness, announcing a press conference scheduled for June 28, 2025. This event aims to rally support for a city-county school board declaration focused on disaster preparedness.
James Chavis, a local advocate, urged commissioners to participate in the press conference, highlighting the need for community involvement in disaster planning. He noted that recent natural disasters have underscored the urgency of being prepared, especially as federal funding for such initiatives may not be forthcoming.

Langley requested $25,000 in funding to support programs aimed at empowering boys and young men of color in Durham. He stressed the critical need for investment in community initiatives that address issues such as juvenile crime and educational disparities. Langley argued that funding these programs is essential for creating a supportive environment that fosters success for young men of color.
The BOCC also reviewed several consent agenda items, including a significant approval for a $637,195 grant for the emergency operations center and backup 911 capital project. This funding marks a notable achievement, as Durham County was the only county in North Carolina to receive such support in the fiscal year 2024.
As the meeting concluded, commissioners acknowledged the importance of these discussions and the need for continued investment in community programs and disaster preparedness initiatives. The outcomes of these efforts are expected to have a lasting impact on the safety and well-being of Durham residents.
