Pender County Health Board presents comprehensive 2024 State of Health report

The Pender County Board of Commissioners convened on June 2, 2025, to discuss the State of the County's Health Report, highlighting critical health issues and initiatives impacting local residents. The population of Pender County is currently estimated at 70,077, with notable demographic shifts, including an increase in the Hispanic population from 3% to 8.3% over recent years.

The report revealed that cancer remains the leading cause of death in Pender County, followed by heart disease and stroke. Alarmingly, opioid overdoses have emerged as a significant concern, particularly among individuals aged 18 to 35. The health department is actively addressing these issues through various initiatives, including substance use prevention programs and community outreach efforts.

Miss Mosier highlighted the importance of prenatal care, noting that while the teen birth rate is lower than the state average, there is still work to be done to ensure all expectant mothers receive care in their first trimester. The health department has been proactive in promoting health education and screenings, particularly for low-income individuals.

In addition to addressing chronic diseases, the report underscored the need for community collaboration in tackling health challenges. The health department has engaged in various outreach activities, including heart-healthy events and substance use prevention campaigns, to foster a healthier community.
