Pitt County Schools award contract to Dunright for middle school gym renovations

The Pitt County Schools Board meeting on June 2, 2025, highlighted significant developments regarding structural improvements at local middle schools, particularly Aiden Middle, Welcome Middle, and Farmville Bridal. The board discussed bids from six contractors for essential renovations, which include reinforcing gym walls with rebar and a slurry grout mixture. The bids varied dramatically, ranging from approximately $394,867 to nearly $2 million.

After thorough evaluation, the board expressed confidence in selecting Dunright Incorporated, a Chesapeake, Virginia-based contractor known for its efficient, self-performing work model. This approach is expected to reduce costs significantly, as the company handles the work internally rather than subcontracting. Dunright has been in operation since 1982 and specializes in short-term renovations, making them a suitable choice for the project.

Board members raised concerns about the wide price range and sought assurance regarding Dunright's past performance on similar projects. It was noted that METER Construction was the only other company with experience in the exact repairs needed, having previously worked on similar projects for Pitt County Schools. The board acknowledged that while Dunright's bid is lower, the potential for unforeseen costs remains, and they will need to prepare for possible change orders as the project progresses.

In addition to the gym renovations, the board also discussed a minor revision to policy 3620, aligning it with state law to allow student athletes to profit from their name, image, and likeness, in accordance with NCAA regulations.
