Kaylin Williams wins art competition showcasing Pitt County talent at US Capitol

As the sun set on June 2, 2025, the Pitt County Schools Board gathered for a vibrant meeting that celebrated the achievements of local students and schools, marking the end of another academic year. The atmosphere buzzed with excitement as board members and attendees recognized the artistic and athletic talents that have emerged from the community.

The evening began with a heartfelt tribute to Kaylin Williams, a senior at South Central High School, whose artwork was selected as the district winner in the prestigious North Carolina art competition. This annual event, sponsored by the Congressional Institute, showcases the creativity of high school students across the nation. Kaylin's piece, titled "Double Total," will be displayed in the Cannon Tunnel of the U.S. Capitol, a testament to her exceptional talent and dedication. Her art teacher, Ira Varney, was also acknowledged for his mentorship, highlighting the importance of guidance in nurturing young artists.

Transitioning from the arts to athletics, the board celebrated the achievements of local track stars. Athletic Director Paul Cornwell introduced the Aiden Griffin 4x100 relay team, who recently clinched the state 2A championship. The team, comprised of Madison Langeman, Isabella Asencio, August Overby, and Abigail Mitty, was commended for their hard work and dedication, with the promise of continued success as they prepare for next season.

The spotlight then shifted to Farmville Central's Cameron Sessoms and Elijah Abel, both of whom have made significant strides in their athletic careers. Sessoms, a state champion in the 55-meter hurdles, recently finished second in the nation, while Abel has secured four state championships in long jump and triple jump over the past two years. Their coaches, Corey Roberts and Scott Gardner, were recognized for their commitment to developing these young athletes.

In addition to individual accolades, the board celebrated the success of schools participating in the "Capturing Kids' Hearts" program. Falkland Elementary and Lake Forest were honored as national showcase schools for their efforts in creating a welcoming and supportive environment for students. Their achievements reflect measurable improvements in attendance, academic performance, and school culture. Bethel School and South Central were also recognized for their outstanding implementation of the program in its first year.
