Lowell project features 80 new housing units with granted zoning variances

A significant development project is underway in Lowell, with plans for three new residential buildings that will reshape the Chelmsford Street area. The project features two four-story buildings, each containing 24 units, and a five-story building with 32 units, all designed to enhance the local housing landscape.

During the recent Lowell Planning Board meeting, key details about the project were unveiled. The layout includes parking facilities beneath each building, with a total of 118 parking spaces provided, despite the requirement for 160 spaces. A variance was granted by the zoning board to accommodate this shortfall, citing nearby public transportation options and walkable amenities as mitigating factors.

The project also received approval for building height variances, allowing for the construction of the parking garage and residential units above it. A comprehensive landscaping plan is in the works, with a landscape architect already engaged to ensure the site is aesthetically pleasing and integrates well with the surrounding neighborhood.

The development is strategically positioned to maintain a respectful distance from existing residential properties on Quimby Avenue, with ample green space planned to enhance the area. The Planning Board expressed optimism about the project's potential to provide much-needed housing while improving the overall environment of the site.
