Shawnee County approves seasonal fireworks stands and pickleball agreement

Fireworks sales in Shawnee County are set to expand this summer, following the approval of 23 applications for seasonal stands during the June 20 to July 7 period. This marks a significant change from previous years, as a new state law allows for an extended sales window, although the discharge dates remain unchanged from June 27 to July 4. Joanie Fedani, director of the planning department, confirmed the applications, noting that while some operators retired or chose not to apply, new stands have emerged, including one at Dillon's on 29th and Yurish.

In addition to fireworks, the Shawnee County Commission also approved a memorandum of understanding with Cumulus Media to promote the Spirit of Kansas concerts at Lake Shawnee on July 4. This partnership, valued at over $10,000, includes extensive promotional support, ensuring a vibrant celebration for the community.

The meeting also highlighted the growing popularity of pickleball in the area, with a formalized three-year agreement with the Topeka Pickleball Association. This partnership aims to enhance facilities and programs, allowing for free public lessons and the hosting of tournaments, further solidifying pickleball's presence in Shawnee County.

Lastly, the Stormont Vail Event Center is set to upgrade its ice maintenance equipment with the purchase of a used Zamboni, addressing operational challenges faced with their older model. The commission approved this purchase, along with additional equipment to improve waste management at events.
