KSD AI committee launches pilot programs with Magic School and Flint for personalized learning

The Kirkwood School District Board of Education has taken a significant step towards integrating artificial intelligence (AI) into its educational framework by approving a pilot program for two AI tools, Magic School and Flint. This decision, made during the board meeting on May 19, 2025, aims to enhance personalized learning and support for students while ensuring compliance with privacy regulations.

The pilot program will involve a small group of six educators from various grades, including classroom teachers, special educators, and librarians. These educators will receive training, and parental permission will be required for student participation. The initiative is designed to closely monitor the effectiveness of the AI tools, allowing for real-time adjustments and feedback.

Both Magic School and Flint are intended to empower students by providing tailored academic support. For instance, Magic School assists students in writing poetry by guiding them through the creative process with prompts and feedback, while Flint offers structured support for persuasive speech writing, helping students evaluate sources and strengthen their arguments. The focus is on fostering critical thinking and creativity rather than simply completing assignments for students.

Looking ahead, the district plans to expand the pilot program in the 2025-2026 school year, involving more teachers and incorporating feedback from families and community members. All teachers will undergo initial AI training before the new school year, with plans for student training still in development.
