Ka'ehu director reports cultural education growth to council members

In a vibrant gathering at the Maui County Council, community leaders shared heartfelt testimonies about their ongoing efforts to enrich local cultural education and youth engagement. The meeting, held on June 3, 2025, showcased the impactful work being done by organizations dedicated to nurturing the next generation.

One of the standout voices was the director of cultural education at Ka'ehu, who passionately recounted the organization's growth and success over the past two years. With a commitment to providing comprehensive cultural education, Ka'ehu has served 1,707 individuals last year and is on track to double that number by year’s end. The director highlighted the importance of their programs, which focus on "malama aina," or caring for the land, and "hana no eo," which involves hands-on crafts that utilize local resources. This initiative not only educates students from various school districts but also fosters a deep connection to Hawaiian culture.

Expressing gratitude for the council's support, the director emphasized that the participation of local students, or haumana, constitutes a significant portion of their outreach, with 886 young learners benefiting from these programs. The director's enthusiasm resonated throughout the room, underscoring the vital role community support plays in their mission.

Following this testimony, Denae Marin, the director of community engagement at CAEI, took the floor. With over 15 years of experience in youth services, Marin expressed her commitment to making a difference in the community. She shared her current engagement with a group from Manoa, highlighting the hands-on experiences they are providing to youth. Marin's appeal for continued support from the council reflected a shared vision among community leaders to uplift and empower the younger generation.
