The Tacoma Government Performance Finance Committee recently discussed new regulations aimed at enhancing safety measures for entertainment establishments operating during late hours. The proposed changes, which include a new licensing requirement, are designed to address safety concerns associated with after-hours clubs.
Under the new regulations, live entertainment and dancing will remain prohibited between 2 AM and 6 AM, although recorded music will still be allowed. Establishments seeking to operate during these hours will need to submit a written safety plan to the Tacoma Police Department, which must include provisions for video surveillance at all entry points and the employment of at least two security personnel during operating hours. Additionally, measures such as metal detectors will be required to prevent weapons from entering the premises.

The new licensing process will include an on-site inspection by the police department before a business can operate. If a business refuses inspection, its license will be denied, preventing it from opening.
The annual fee for the new license is set at $300, which will cover the costs of inspections and background checks on applicants. The regulations will clarify that entertainment establishments, which include venues hosting live performances, DJs, and other events, must adhere to these safety measures to ensure community safety.
In addition to the licensing requirements, the committee discussed the distinction between establishments that serve alcohol and those that do not, noting that different regulations apply to each category. The updates aim to provide clearer guidelines for businesses while enhancing public safety in Tacoma.
As Tacoma moves forward with these regulations, the committee emphasized the importance of balancing entertainment options with community safety, ensuring that residents can enjoy nightlife without compromising their well-being.
