Downtown On The Go, a Tacoma-based nonprofit, is making strides to enhance transportation options in the city. Executive Director Laura Swanzeric highlighted the organization’s mission during a recent interview, emphasizing their commitment to making walking, biking, and public transit safer and more convenient for residents.
Since its establishment in February 2013, Downtown On The Go has focused on three main areas: collaborating with local employers to promote sustainable commuting, hosting community events to encourage active transportation, and advocating for policies that improve transportation infrastructure. Swanzeric noted that the organization is currently prioritizing funding for active transportation projects, especially following the recent defeat of a streets initiative that could have supported such efforts.

Swanzeric explained that despite budget constraints, it is crucial to maintain a focus on safety projects that benefit the community.
In addition to advocacy, Downtown On The Go provides educational resources to help residents navigate public transportation and cycling. This includes guidance on bus routes and safe cycling paths, aimed at reducing barriers for those unfamiliar with these options. Swanzeric emphasized the importance of building confidence in residents to make sustainable travel choices.
Community involvement is also a key aspect of their work. Downtown On The Go is seeking volunteers for various summer events, including guided historical walks and public art tours. These events not only promote active transportation but also foster community engagement and education about Tacoma's history.
As the organization continues its efforts, residents are encouraged to participate and take advantage of the resources available to them. For more information on how to get involved, visit downtownonthego.org.
