Hidalgo County reports rising Alzheimer's cases and launches new dementia care services

At the recent City Commission meeting in Pharr, Texas, discussions centered on the pressing issue of Alzheimer's disease, particularly its rising incidence among the aging population. A representative from the Alzheimer's Association highlighted alarming statistics, revealing that Hidalgo County has a 14% incidence rate of Alzheimer's among residents aged 65 and older. The speaker noted significant advancements in treatment options, with two medications—Lekambi and Kinsula—now approved for use. DHR Health is leading the way by administering the first infusion of these treatments. Additionally, a new FDA-approved blood test promises to enhance early diagnosis, allowing individuals aged 55 and older to track the disease more effectively.

The meeting also addressed the potential long-term effects of COVID-19 on brain health, particularly for those who experienced severe oxygen loss during their illness. This emerging concern could lead to a new wave of Alzheimer's cases among younger individuals.

In response to these challenges, the Alzheimer's Association has launched innovative services, including a dementia care service powered by Ripple Care Management. This initiative aims to support families from the moment of diagnosis, guiding them through the complexities of dementia care. Furthermore, a new app has been introduced to help families document their experiences and share resources.
