Drastic measures are on the table for Tulare County as the Board of Supervisors moves to address ongoing issues with the Slurry Cemetery District. Supervisor McCarty led the charge during the June 3 meeting, advocating for a formal complaint to the California Department of Consumer Affairs, Cemetery and Funeral Bureau. “It’s gone on for a very long time,” McCarty stated, expressing frustration over the lack of cooperation among district members. The motion to draft and submit the complaint passed unanimously, with a vote of 4-0, as Supervisor Townsend was absent.
In addition to cemetery concerns, the board reviewed responses to the Tulare County Grand Jury's final report on Library Book Machines. Chief of Staff Israel Sotelo outlined the findings, confirming that previous locations for the machines were not ideal and that maintenance had been lacking. The board agreed to implement recommendations aimed at improving the new book lockers, which will include better management and more strategic placement in community-centric areas.
The board emphasized the importance of community engagement, with plans for public outreach to ensure residents are informed about the new locker systems. As the county navigates these challenges, the focus remains on enhancing services and accountability for the benefit of the community.
