West Sacramento plans 32-acre neighborhood park pending grant approval

West Sacramento is poised to enhance its community recreational offerings with plans for a new neighborhood park that could add nearly 32 acres of green space. During a recent PRIS Commission meeting, city officials discussed the potential acquisition of adjacent land owned by the Port of West Sacramento, which would allow for the development of this expansive park.

The proposed park aims to connect with the city’s existing trail network and will focus on four key design principles: celebrating the natural beauty of the site, preserving mature oak groves, providing viable recreational elements, and ensuring inclusivity. The park is envisioned to feature a variety of amenities, including a bike safety park, rock climbing wall, disc golf, volleyball courts, and a children's play area. Additionally, improvements to the boat launch area are planned, with a focus on accessibility for non-motorized watercraft like kayaks and paddleboards.

Community engagement is a critical part of the planning process. City officials emphasized the importance of gathering public feedback to shape the park's design and amenities. A community meeting is scheduled for June 10 at the Bart's Hill Access area, where residents can share their ideas and preferences.

Commissioners expressed enthusiasm for the project, highlighting the need for safety measures at the boat launch and the inclusion of features that cater to families and individuals with disabilities. Suggestions included creating gated play areas for children and increasing the number of benches along trails for resting.

The success of this initiative hinges on securing grant funding, which would not only support the park's development but also ensure that the land remains designated as open space in perpetuity.
