Mount High School valedictorian presents literacy project to state board of education

Stratford School District is set to enhance student engagement and literacy initiatives following a productive monthly Board of Education meeting held on June 4, 2025. A highlight of the meeting was the upcoming presentation by Joey Darbili, the valedictorian of Bunnell High School and a member of the Student State Advisory Council, who will report on a literacy project to the state board next week. This initiative underscores the district's commitment to student-led advocacy and educational improvement.

Superintendent's report emphasized the district's resilience and progress amid challenges, particularly following the tragic loss of a beloved student. The superintendent expressed gratitude for community support and highlighted recent achievements, including Stratford Public Schools being selected as one of only 12 districts nationwide to join a digital innovation and well-being task force. This initiative, funded by the Pinterest Impact Fund, will focus on student mental health and digital wellness, providing $7,500 in support.

The meeting also addressed financial challenges, particularly a special education deficit projected to exceed $3.7 million. However, proactive measures, including renegotiating vendor contracts and applying for grants, have helped mitigate this deficit, with hopes of reducing it to under $500,000 by the end of the fiscal year.

Additionally, the Board approved the renewal of the food service management contract with Sodexo, which includes a modest fee increase capped at 3.8%. This decision aligns with state guidelines and aims to maintain quality food services for students.

The meeting concluded with discussions on new curriculum initiatives, including a digital literacy program for grades 7 and 8, which aligns with the district's educational goals. The Board's commitment to fostering student leadership through various field trips and activities was also reaffirmed.
