The Santa Ana City Council took a significant step in raising awareness for Alzheimer's disease during their meeting on June 3, 2025, by proclaiming May as Alzheimer's and Brain Awareness Month. This initiative highlights the urgent need to address the impact of Alzheimer's, which affects over 7 million Americans, including more than 700,000 residents in California alone.
Deborah Levy, the executive director of the Alzheimer's Association's Orange County chapter, was present to accept the proclamation. She emphasized the profound effects of the disease not only on those diagnosed but also on families and caregivers. The Alzheimer's Association has been pivotal in funding research, contributing over $405 million globally, with nearly $3.5 million allocated to projects in Orange County. Their efforts aim to enhance understanding of the disease, develop effective treatments, and ultimately find a cure.

The council's proclamation encourages community involvement through events such as the Walk to End Alzheimer's, which fosters solidarity and raises funds for care and research. To further show support, the council plans to illuminate the water tower in purple throughout May.
Derek Serrano, board chair of the Alzheimer's Association in Orange County, expressed gratitude to the city leaders for their compassion and commitment to addressing this devastating disease. He highlighted the importance of community collaboration in tackling Alzheimer's and encouraged residents to engage with educational resources, including PBS documentaries on the topic.
This proclamation not only raises awareness but also reinforces Santa Ana's commitment to supporting those affected by Alzheimer's, ensuring that no one faces this challenge alone.
