Longmont City Council debates marijuana hospitality ordinance amid health concerns

The Longmont City Council convened on June 3, 2025, to discuss a proposed ordinance that would amend several sections of the Longmont Municipal Code to allow marijuana hospitality establishments. This ordinance has sparked significant debate, particularly regarding public health and safety concerns related to indoor smoking.

During the public hearing, representatives from the American Lung Association and Boulder County Public Health voiced strong opposition to the proposed ordinance, emphasizing the health risks associated with secondhand marijuana smoke. Nick Torres, speaking for the Lung Association, highlighted that allowing exemptions to the smoke-free air law for marijuana establishments could jeopardize the health of workers and nearby residents. He pointed out that secondhand marijuana smoke contains harmful toxins similar to those found in tobacco smoke, which can lead to serious health issues, including chronic respiratory problems and cardiovascular disease.

Alberto Delos Rios from Boulder County Public Health echoed these concerns, stressing that smoke from marijuana establishments could infiltrate adjacent businesses and shared spaces, affecting employees and customers who do not wish to be exposed to smoke. He urged the council to consider the broader implications of the ordinance on community health and economic viability for local businesses.

Abby Tracer, also representing Boulder County Public Health, called for stronger local regulations to ensure the safety of patrons and employees in marijuana hospitality venues. She pointed out gaps in state regulations, particularly regarding ventilation standards and the monitoring of cannabis impairment, which could leave workers vulnerable to unsafe conditions.

In response to these concerns, Councilor Popkin proposed an amendment to the ordinance to prohibit indoor smoking of marijuana, reflecting the apprehensions raised during public comments. This motion aims to prioritize the health and safety of all Longmont residents and workers, ensuring that the implementation of marijuana hospitality businesses does not come at the expense of public well-being.
