Hinsdale Lake Terrace RAFT program sees ridership grow by 130% in first quarter

During the DuPage County Transportation Committee meeting on June 3, 2025, officials provided a significant update on the RAFT program, a pilot initiative aimed at addressing transportation challenges in the Hinsdale Lake Terrace neighborhood. This area has been identified as a transportation-disadvantaged community, with many residents lacking reliable mobility options.

The RAFT program, which began as a response to community needs identified during the COVID-19 pandemic, has seen promising growth since its launch. Initially, around 100 residents enrolled in January 2025, but that number has now increased to approximately 230 participants. This surge is largely attributed to the high percentage of households in the area that own zero or one vehicle, highlighting the critical need for accessible transportation solutions.

The program offers free rides within a defined geographic area, allowing residents to travel to essential destinations, including employment and shopping locations in nearby Burr Ridge. The service operates within a five-mile radius, with specific boundaries set to manage costs effectively. Currently, rides average about $15 each, and usage has tripled since the program's inception, indicating a strong demand for the service.

Regular users of the program number between 90 and 100, demonstrating that the RAFT initiative is making a tangible difference in the lives of residents who previously faced significant mobility barriers. The committee's commitment to quarterly updates on the program reflects an ongoing effort to monitor its impact and adapt to the community's needs.
