Modesto opens 53 housing units at Jenny's Place to tackle homelessness

The City of Modesto Council convened on June 3, 2025, to address various community issues, with a significant focus on homelessness, local events, and business support initiatives.

The meeting began with a report on the city's ongoing efforts to tackle homelessness. In April, the downtown street teams, consisting of 21 members, logged approximately 337 volunteer hours, successfully collecting 15,800 pounds of trash from city streets and parks. The Modesto Gospel Mission reported providing safe sleeping accommodations for 56 individuals, including women and children, along with essential services such as showers, food, and job placement assistance. A ribbon-cutting ceremony was held for Jenny's Place, which opened 53 units of permanent supportive housing aimed at helping individuals transition off the streets. Additionally, the grand opening of Hannah's House, a facility for women and children, was celebrated, further enhancing the city's resources for vulnerable populations.

Vice Mayor Bavaro highlighted the city's revolving loan fund, which offers small business loans ranging from $2,500 to $75,000, with competitive interest rates. This initiative aims to support local businesses in improving their operations.

Council Member Alvarez brought attention to the upcoming American Graffiti Classic Car Parade, emphasizing its family-friendly atmosphere and encouraging community participation. He also discussed the need for a dedicated Chamber of Commerce to support African American businesses in Modesto, suggesting connections with existing organizations to revive this effort.

Council Member Rickey addressed concerns regarding Walgreens' inventory issues, attributing them to labor challenges rather than stock shortages. He also reported progress on the development of Firefighters Park and the reopening of the Dry Creek Trail, which enhances the city's recreational offerings.

Council Member Escudia Brayton shared updates on community engagement, including a birthday celebration for a centenarian and the city's efforts to provide vital information on air quality through its website. She also promoted the summer activity guide, which offers diverse family activities.

Council Member Williams expressed condolences for a law enforcement officer recently killed in the line of duty and highlighted the significance of community events, including the upcoming Graffiti Weekend festivities.
