Michigan City residents can look forward to a series of community-focused events and initiatives following the recent Common Council meeting held on June 3, 2025. A key highlight was the announcement of a follow-up meeting on June 10, aimed at addressing ongoing concerns in the Sheridan Beach area. Councilman Cora will host this meeting at the Emergency Operations Center at 5 PM, where community members can discuss potential solutions and adjustments to existing orders.
In addition to addressing local issues, the council recognized the achievements of local law enforcement. Chief Forker and Chief Cooney will receive the Unsung Hero Award from the Michigan City Human Rights Commission on June 12, while Detective Taylor Tillman will be honored with the I Rise Award from the Indiana Black Expo on June 13. These awards celebrate their dedication and contributions to the community.

Looking ahead, the council is preparing for the National Night Out event on August 5, 2025, from 5 to 8 PM. This year’s festivities will take place in the Seventh and Franklin Street area and will feature activities such as laser tag, food giveaways, and community engagement opportunities. The event aims to foster relationships among residents and law enforcement.
Additionally, the Michigan City Midnight Hoops program is set to return this July, providing a safe environment for youth aged 13 to 25 to engage in basketball and community resources. This initiative, which has historical roots in crime prevention, will run from July 13 to August 3, with activities every Sunday evening at the YMCA.
These initiatives reflect the council's commitment to community engagement, youth development, and public safety, promising a vibrant summer for Michigan City residents.
