Union County Board recognizes Braylon Hartis and June UCPS influencers

The Union County Public Schools Board of Education convened on June 3, 2025, to honor outstanding contributions from students and staff within the district. The meeting began with the presentation of the John H. Crowder Service Award, named after a dedicated community leader who supported youth in Union County for over three decades. This monthly award recognizes exceptional high school students who excel academically and contribute significantly to their schools and communities.

This month, the award was presented to Braylon Hartis, a senior from Parkwood High School. Hartis, an accomplished Air Force Junior ROTC cadet, demonstrated exemplary leadership throughout his tenure. He served as a flight sergeant and later as group commander, leading over 80 cadets. His leadership resulted in numerous accolades, including the top academic flight award and a first-place victory in a drill competition. Hartis is set to join the United States Marine Corps in July 2025, marking a significant step in his commitment to service.

Following the student recognition, the board celebrated two employees as UCPS Influencers for June. This program acknowledges the dedication and exceptional work ethic of staff members nominated by their peers, students, and community members. The honorees were Xinjiang Chen, a Mandarin immersion teacher at Marvin Elementary, and Kristen Cutze, a bookkeeper at Waxhaw Elementary.

Chen was praised for her innovative teaching methods and dedication to her students, highlighted by her organization of educational activities such as a Chinese hot pot outing and participation in a statewide storytelling competition. Cutze was recognized for her resilience and ability to foster a supportive community within her school, demonstrating creativity and a selfless commitment to her colleagues and students.

The board officially proclaimed Chen and Cutze as UCPS Influencers, acknowledging their significant contributions to the district's success. The meeting concluded with congratulations extended to all award recipients, emphasizing the importance of recognizing excellence within the Union County educational community.
