Norwalk honors Rachel Contreras as nominee for Older Americans Award

The Norwalk City Council meeting on June 3, 2025, highlighted the recognition of Rachel Contreras as the city's nominee for the Los Angeles County Older Americans Award. This honor celebrates individuals who have made significant contributions to their communities, and Contreras was acknowledged for her extensive volunteer work spanning over 40 years.

Contreras has been a dedicated member of the Norwalk community, actively involved with the Norwalk Senior Center, social services, the Knights of Columbus, and the Norwalk Women's Club. Currently serving as the vice chair of the Senior Citizens Commission, she has played a vital role in uplifting and supporting the older adult community in Norwalk.

During the meeting, Mayor Tony Ayala presented a commendation to Contreras, recognizing her long-standing commitment to service. The commendation noted her efforts in preparing holiday baskets for families in need, collecting food and pet supplies for local pantries, and organizing donations for homeless individuals. The theme of this year’s recognition program, "Flip the Script on Aging," emphasizes the dignity and value that older adults bring to their communities.
