Albert County evaluates 48-mile electric transmission line construction project

Elbert County's Planning Commission recently discussed a significant proposal for a new electric transmission line that could reshape the region's energy landscape. The application seeks approval for a 48-mile double circuit electric transmission line, which will traverse unincorporated areas of Elbert County, starting from County Road 194 and County Road 129, and extending southward to Kiowa along Colorado Highway 86.

The project is expected to involve both temporary and permanent land disturbances, with approximately 310 acres of temporary disturbance and 97 acres of permanent disturbance. The proposed route primarily runs through agricultural and residential zones, with some sections crossing economic development zones. This development is crucial as it aims to enhance the electrical infrastructure in the area, which is vital for supporting local growth and development.

During the meeting, the Planning Commission reviewed responses to public comments submitted before the referral comment period closed on May 22. Although these responses were not included in the initial staff reports, they have since been integrated into the current presentation for the commission's consideration.

The proposed transmission line will impact several local fire protection districts, including the Kiowa Fire Protection District and the Big Sandy Fire Protection District, which are essential for ensuring community safety.
