Glendale City Council has unveiled an ambitious plan to enhance electric vehicle (EV) infrastructure and promote sustainable transportation options during its recent special meeting on June 4, 2025. The council approved a budget of $500,000 for the 2025-2026 fiscal year, with plans to double this amount in the following year to support the growing demand for EV charging stations.
The city anticipates a significant annual growth of 15 to 25 new charging ports, which will include both level 2 and level 3 chargers. To further incentivize residents, Glendale will continue its residential EV charging rebate program, offering rebates ranging from $200 to $700 for level 2 chargers, along with additional rebates for electric panel upgrades. The budget for this program is set at $75,000 annually, aiming to support approximately 100 homes each year.
For commercial and multifamily properties, the council has allocated $1 million annually for a rebate program that provides up to $75,000 per project for level 2 EV chargers. This initiative aims to install 25 new charging ports each year, reflecting the city's commitment to expanding EV access.
In a forward-looking move, Glendale is also developing a used electric vehicle rebate program, expected to launch in the next fiscal year with a budget of $500,000. This program will offer rebates between $1,500 and $2,500, with larger incentives available for lower-income residents.
The council discussed the upcoming sunset of the California clean fuel rewards program, which will no longer incur expenses for the city. However, Glendale will continue to provide resources for residents through a web-based customer guide that helps users navigate EV options and incentives.
Additionally, the city plans to host EV and e-bike guest drive events, with a budget of $140,000 for the 2025-2026 fiscal year. These events will be co-sponsored with neighboring utilities, allowing for larger gatherings and increased participation.
The council also introduced a new leaf blower rebate program, offering $50 rebates up to $250 in combination with existing AQMD rebates, with an annual budget of $66,000.
As Glendale moves forward with these initiatives, the city aims to foster a more sustainable community while addressing the growing interest in electric vehicles and clean energy solutions. The council's proactive approach reflects a commitment to enhancing the quality of life for residents and promoting environmental responsibility.
