City of Derby seeks island annexation for new water facilities

The Sedgwick County Board of Commissioners has taken a significant step toward supporting local development by approving the City of Derby's request for island annexation. This decision, made during the meeting on June 4, 2025, allows Derby to expand its boundaries to include two parcels of land designated for future well sites and a water treatment facility.

The annexation request, initiated by Derby on April 30 and formally resolved on May 13, was evaluated against state requirements. According to Kansas statute 12.526c, the Board of Commissioners (BOCC) needed to determine that the annexation would not hinder growth in Derby or any other city within Sedgwick County. After thorough consideration, the BOCC concluded that the annexation aligns with the community investment plan and does not impede regional development.

The annexation area, currently undeveloped and used for agriculture, is located east of South Hillside Avenue and north of East 95th Street South. The City of Derby will assume responsibility for essential services such as water, sewer, and law enforcement, while fire and road maintenance services will remain under the jurisdiction of Sedgwick County.

Public Works had previously expressed concerns regarding the annexation, but these were addressed in discussions with Derby officials, leading to a consensus that the project could proceed without issues. The BOCC's approval marks a proactive move to facilitate Derby's growth and enhance local infrastructure, ensuring that the community can meet future demands for water and treatment services.

As Derby prepares to implement its plans, this annexation is expected to play a crucial role in supporting the city's development goals and improving service delivery to residents.
