Clatsop County Public Health unveils health equity plan focused on community needs

Clatsop County is taking significant strides toward improving health equity with the introduction of a comprehensive health equity plan, presented during the recent Board of Commissioners meeting. The plan, developed by the Clatsop County Public Health Department, aims to ensure that all residents have equal opportunities for good health, regardless of their background or circumstances.

Deputy Director Jill Quackenbush and Health Promotion Supervisor Lisa Schuyler outlined the plan's vision, which emphasizes community-driven solutions, collaboration, data-informed decision-making, and sustainability. This initiative is part of a broader effort to modernize public health in alignment with the Oregon Health Authority's goals.

Key focus areas of the plan include family support and childcare, youth substance use prevention, and enhancing organizational capacity for health equity. Community feedback highlighted the need for accessible, culturally responsive family support, particularly in rural and low-income areas. The plan proposes actions such as service referrals, outreach, and emergency planning to address these needs.

Youth substance use, particularly concerning vaping and alcohol, emerged as a critical issue. The health department is conducting a needs assessment to better understand this challenge and plans to increase awareness and support for prevention among families and youth.

Internally, the department aims to strengthen its accountability structures by incorporating cultural responsiveness training and equity goals into staff evaluations. Metrics for success will be established to track progress, with annual reports to ensure transparency and community engagement.

Next steps include finalizing the plan, launching initial actions in the upcoming fiscal year, and forming a health equity work group to oversee implementation. This proactive approach underscores Clatsop County's commitment to fostering a healthier, more equitable community for all its residents.
