Architect Nathan Albers presents outdoor kitchen proposal for Douglas County property

Castle Rock's Historic Preservation Board has approved a new outdoor kitchen addition featuring a wood-burning pizza oven, following a meeting on June 4, 2025. The proposed structure will be located at the rear of the property, ensuring minimal visibility from the street and preserving the aesthetic integrity of the existing home.

Architect Nathan Albers presented the design, emphasizing that the kitchen will not require gas or electrical lines, relying solely on propane. The addition will be constructed with materials that match the existing home, including shingles and stonework, ensuring a cohesive look. The roof of the new kitchen will extend from the existing structure, maintaining the current roofline and not altering the building's appearance from the front.

The board's decision was based on a thorough review of the landmark alteration criteria and the Secretary of the Interior's standards for rehabilitation. Staff recommended approval, noting that the addition is removable and will have a low impact on the integrity of the existing structure. The chimney, which rises approximately 14 feet, will also be positioned in a way that minimizes its visibility.
