North Ogden Water Operators enhance drought response with advanced metering technology

The North Ogden Planning Commission meeting on June 4, 2025, highlighted significant advancements in the city's water management system, particularly in response to ongoing drought conditions. Water operators presented innovative technology that allows the city to monitor water usage with precision, tracking consumption down to a tenth of a gallon per minute through advanced water meters utilizing cell technology.

Previously, water data was collected monthly by operators driving through neighborhoods. Now, with the installation of a base station and several repeaters on light poles, data is transmitted daily. This system enables the city to quickly identify leaks, sending alarms if water flows continuously for 12 hours. Operators can then assist residents in locating and fixing leaks, which often stem from minor issues like faulty toilet flappers. Addressing these leaks promptly can prevent significant water waste and reduce residents' bills.

City officials emphasized the importance of water conservation, especially during drought periods. North Ogden's unique position allows it to rely on its own culinary water resources, reducing dependence on external water suppliers. This independence is seen as a valuable asset compared to other cities that primarily purchase water from larger systems.
