Hillsborough County declares May 2025 Asian Pacific American Heritage Month

Asian Pacific American Heritage Month took center stage at the Hillsborough County Board of County Commissioners meeting on June 4, 2025, as leaders recognized the significant contributions of Asian Pacific Americans to the community. Commissioner Cameron Cepeda led the special recognition, inviting prominent figures from various Asian communities to the podium, including representatives from the Philippine, Vietnamese, and Chinese communities.

The meeting highlighted the historical significance of Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, established by Congress in 1978 and expanded to the entire month of May in 1992. Commissioner Cepeda emphasized the diverse origins of Hillsborough County's Asian Pacific American population, which includes individuals from Cambodia, China, India, Japan, and more. He noted their vital role in enriching the county's cultural fabric and economic prosperity.

A proclamation was read, declaring May 2025 as Asian Pacific American Heritage Month in Hillsborough County. It acknowledged the contributions of Asian, South Asian, and Pacific Islander Americans across various sectors, including government, business, and the arts. The proclamation also condemned the influence of the Chinese Communist Party on these communities while promoting joy and celebration of their rich cultures.

Mister Hung Mai, a leader in the local Asian American Pacific Islander community, expressed gratitude for the recognition and highlighted the importance of cultural heritage in shaping the future. He encouraged residents to learn more about Asian American history and to celebrate the diverse culinary offerings available in the community.

The meeting concluded with heartfelt remarks from community representatives, including Vivian Furigai Dajin from the Philippine Cultural Foundation, who underscored the importance of preserving and promoting Filipino culture.
